Greetings!
Since we will have a character completing a Dragonquest and Bonding with a Dragon at the next
event, and since Dragonfire is having massive technical difficulties (and probably will continue
to do so for a while), I've decided to devote this essay to Questing and Bonding.
To become a Dragonrider you must:
Completing the tenth mission, known as the Dragonquest, earns you the right either to request a
warband or to be Bonded with a Dumnonian Bronze. The Ruler may refuse to grant that request as
well.
If the Warrior is a Dumnonian or non-Dumnonian who wants to Bond with a Mutant, he/she does not
have to undertake these Quests. If the person is a non-Warrior and yet wishes to Bond with a
Mutant, that is possible if the mutant came from the mass hatching when Shane and
Miranda fought
their Battle in the Dragon's Back Mountains. (This is an option for newly created characters
only; it is not possible for pre-existing characters who do not already ride Mutants.)
There are a few Bronzes who started out their lives as something else. Perhaps a sandhog or a
pocket rat. Maybe even a Krill. Through magic and a bit of divine intervention, these creatures
were forced to shapeshift permanently out of their natural form and into the shape of a Bronze
Dragon. These Bronzes are like True Bronzes in every respect, except they preserve a portion of
the mindset of whatever creature they originally were and they have not had the extensive
Training that True Bronzes must undergo. It is considered too dangerous to allow such Dragons to
fly with a desert century. But if you Bond with a shifted Dragon, you can either raid
Mount Cinnamar on your own, sign on to fly cover for a caravan, fly
with a Rashtaran century, fly with an Other Continent century or find some other way to earn your
keep. Because these Dragons are not True Bronzes, non-Dumnonians are allowed to Bond with
them.
Most non-Dumnonians Bond with mutants. There are two types of mutants. The first is from the
group that has been subjected to shield spells, time magic spells, and a lot of other
complications most people don't want to think about. The second is those eggs that are currently
being laid near the Valley of Ancients. The mutants in the first group are only available to new
characters, but they may Bond with non-Dumnonians and non-Warriors. The mutants in the second
group may be earned by any non-Dumnonian Warrior. Characters who are Bonded to mutants must
reside in Rashtar until their dragons are Trained, which will be in a
year or more. So you might want to think twice about asking for a mutant.
Since Anala is a full Dumnonian and will be Bonding with a Bronze, let's take a closer look at
this ceremony.
Upon the completion of a Dragonquest, a Warrior is granted an audience with the Dumnonian
Ruler. At this audience, the Warrior may request either a warband or the right to Bond with a
Dumnonian Bronze. The Ruler is under no obligation to grant either request and may simply send
the Warrior out on another mission. If the Warrior asks for a warband, the Ruler will send word
to the caravaneer enclave of the camp, and those creatures who are interested in following the
Warrior will report to the Ruler's Tent to be presented to their new leader. If, however, the
Warrior asks to Bond with a Dumnonian Bronze, then the Ruler and the Warrior report to the
Valley of Ancients where the following ceremony takes place.
The would-be Rider stands on the floor of the Valley of Ancients, facing the doors of
Corin's Tomb. The Dumnonian Ruler and the Council of Ancients take
their places atop the cliffs of the Valley. The Ruler then presents the Warrior's request to the
Council. The Ruler verifies that the Warrior has satisfactorily completed a Dragonquest and is
worthy of Bonding with a Bronze. If the Council agrees with the Ruler's assessment of the
Warrior, the UnBonded Dragons who want a Rider are summoned to the Valley.
Once the UnBonded Dragons have assembled, the Ruler introduces the Warrior to them using this
formula: "A Rider presents himself [or herself]! A very worthy/good/decent [or whatever the Ruler's
assessment of the Warrior is] one! [The Ruler next lists at least one but preferably three of the
Warrior's outstanding accomplishments or qualifications.] I give to you [Warrior's name]! Is
there one among you who will consent to Bond with him [or her]?"
If no Dragon agrees to Bond with the Warrior, the Ruler sends the disappointed individual back
out on another mission.
If more than one Dragon agrees to Bond with the Warrior, the Ruler, guided by the wisdom of the
Council of Ancients, selects the future-Bond Partner.
The Dragon then asks the Warrior: "What about it, [Warrior's name]? Will you walk through the door of Corin's Tomb with me?"
If the warrior agrees, the Dragon takes his or her humanform and the Pair approaches the doors of
Corin's Tomb.
The Dumnonian Ruler meets the would-be partners at the doors of the Tomb.
Dragon and warrior drop in salaams to their monarch.
The Ruler waits for the pair to straighten, then begins the Call and Response. The questions
asked by the Ruler are a magic spell and must be recited exactly (with variations for permanently
shifted Bronzes and Mutants). The answers given by the Pair are somewhat flexible in their
wording.
Throughout the questioning, the Ruler stares intently into the respondents' eyes, forming
a mental link with each member of the Pair.
Ruler: "[Warrior's name], having completed ten missions in my name, you come before me to claim your
reward. I remind you that it is your right to ask for an entire band of warriors to command. You
will never be given another chance to make this request. Will you give up that command to be
joined instead with the [Dragon's Age Category] Dragon [Dragon's name], Bonded soul-to-soul,
heart-to-heart, until Death or Judgment severs that Bond?"
Warrior: "Yes, I will."
Ruler: "Will you care for him/her needs before your own in both his/her dragon- and her humanform?"
Warrior: "I will."
Ruler: "Will you submit without protest to the Judgment of the Council if, for any reason--be it your
fault or no--he/she comes to harm?"
Warrior: "I will."
Ruler [turning to the Dragon]: "Will you, [Dragon's name], give up your freedom and do the bidding of this warrior, serving
him/her to the best of your ability with body, mind and soul?"
Dragon: "I will." [That's all that's required, but most Dragons are a bit more wordy than that.]
Ruler: "Will you give up all wealth to him/her that he/she might purchase what he needs to care for
you?"
Dragon: "I will."
Ruler: "Will you guard yourself against harm so that your Rider will never have to face the Council on
account of you?"
Dragon: "I will."
Warrior [to Ruler]: "We are agreed. Create the Bond." [If the Warrior doesn't know to make this request, he/she
will be prompted by the Dragon.]
The Ruler embraces the warrior. A magic spell triggers, laying bare the warrior's soul and
mind. The Ruler then embraces the Dragon's humanform, triggering a similar spell.
The Ruler then charges: "Do not touch until the magic of Corin instructs you to do so."
The Ruler uses a spell to open the doors to the Tomb. "If you will be Bonded, enter herein."
Sometimes the Ruler adds a final command, telling the Pair to look for something or to ask
Corin's shade something in particular when they see him, then he sends the Warrior and Dragon
into the Tomb.
That, then, is an overview of Quests and Bonding. See you at the RP!

Dragonlords' T-shirt
Dragonlords has covered its expenses and is starting to earn enough money for us to do something fun for our members. The BOD has decided that what we would like to do with the extra money is subsidize T-shirts for all members of the club (We may be able to buy the shirts outright for people; it depends on how many folks want them.).
If you would like to submit a design for the club T-shirt, send your
suggestion in .gif or .jpg format to Dragonlord Krin at Legend@malcor.com.
Try to keep your design suggestions to four colors or less, since
that will significantly cut our costs. Since we received no submissions
the first time we tried this, let's try it again
