Greetings!
Since the question came up when two of our members were working on a story, I thought I'd take the opportunity to explain in this newsletter exactly how Dragonriders carry passengers on their Dragons.
You don't see a lot of shuttling of people via Dragon going on around Centuria because of those nasty spikes that line the Dragons backs. Most people prefer to use the ubiquitous teleport pools that are common in Daethia or the stable warps that are known to caravaneers. But if a character really has to travel as a passenger with a Dragonrider, there are two ways that can be accomplished.
First, you have to understand how a Dragonrider sits on his Dragon. This is modeled off how pictures of Lawrence of Arabia sat his camel and how I've seen nomads sit Bactrian camels. Look at the first picture here:
Shashtah has his right leg crooked around Tphah's spike at the base of her neckridge. His left leg lies flat against her left shoulder. It's a bit like a woman sitting side-saddle. If you read the novels and short stories, you'll see this position described many times. This method of sitting on the Dragons is what accounts for the strange scar patterns on Dragonriders' legs.
Now, to carry a passenger, a Rider can
There are no other acceptable ways for a Dragonrider to carry a passenger. Everything else interferes with a Dragon's ability to fly. Saddles, baskets, etc., are not allowed. The only permitted tack is the harness that enables a Rider to speedfly. A Dragon may not carry anyone as a Rider except the person who is trained to Ride on him. (The Council of Ancients is really fussy about this rule.) Even Shifted Dragons and mutants adhere to these regulations. Also, a mutant may prove to be so small that it may be impossible for someone to carry a passenger. For instance, Quatar never carries anyone on Peri unless it's a dire emergency. The bulk would interfere with Peri's wing movements and make it nearly impossible for him to fly.
Whatever style is used, most Riders do not carry passengers longer than just going from one place to another. Essentially what you have, in spite of the immense size of the creatures, are one-man fighter planes. These are not the draconic equivalent of troop transports. So it is possible to catch a ride to a remote location with a Dragonrider, but keep in mind that it is also dangerous. There might be a quicker, more comfortable and safer way to get where you are going.
