Gifts FAQ

People often ask what characters with the various Gifts are capable of doing. Here are the known Gifts and what they do:

• Animal Mindspeech (telepathy with animals)
• Doublesight (ability of a Healer to see distress or pain inside a patient)
• Earth Magic (also called Earth-Witchery; see below)
• Earth-sense
• Empathy (also called Feeling)
• FarSight (also called FarSeeing, Looking and Seeing; clairvoyance)
• Fetching (teleportation)
• Firestarting (a form of Fetching that calls fire from the elemental plane)
• Foresight
• Healing
• Mage Gift (the ability to sense the energy around living things and to use that energy to work spells)
• Mindspeech (also called Thoughtsensing and FarSpeaking; telepathy with Humans)

Although sometimes mentioned as a Gift, Mind Healing and Trauma Healing are actually learned Healer specialties.

Mindspeech has a "Private Mode", which can be used so that mental conversations cannot be overheard by other Mindspeakers.

Earth Magic

Earth Magic (also called Earth-Witchery) is not true magic (which is also called "High Magic"). For information about true magic, see The Magic of Velgarth. Earth Magic is the low form of magic used by Hedge-Wizards and Earth-Witches. The power can appear as a Mind Magic Gift as well.

Earth mages can work minor spells. These mages are also called Earth-Witches and Wisewomen, partially depending on the cultural background of the person who uses the term.

Most Earth Magic is tied to the state of the land and is used to heal land that has been damaged by magic (as well as by nonmagical means).
