Dear Misty Fans,

Border Art The Faces of Fantasy is a collection of photographs of fantasy writers taken by Patti Perret. Each author has a full page picture and a chance to say a few words. There are photos of Marion Zimmer Bradley, Anne McCaffrey, Peter Beagle, Storm Constantine, Barbara Hambly, Emma Bull, Charles de Lint, Melanie Rawn and many, many more. Misty's photo shows her holding 'Kaika, her umbrella cockatoo. Her write-up speaks of the importance of "paying forward.". She and Larry feel that htere is no way for anyone to ever pay back all the good things that come along, so the best response is to pay forward, to give of oneself when needed. This philosophy is reflected in their writing and in their care of wild birds.

The Faces of Fantasy is a large size paperback published by Tor and priced at [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.]. For information of Tor Books on the World Wide Web, use [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.]. (Buy Faces before Dragon*Con and play spot the author.)

The latest issue of Marion Zimmer Bradley's FANTASY Magazine, #34,has the usual excellent short stories, an interview with Ellen Kushner, and two very informative articles. Marion's "Why Did My Story Get Regected?" and Heather Rose Jones' "Writers Talk Back: Show Me" are filled with helpful advice for would-be writers. Subscribe to Marion Zimmer Bradley's FANTASY Magazine for [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.]. Make your check payable to Marion Zimmer Bradley and mail your order to [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.].

Sword of Ice and Other Tales of Valdemar are worth waiting for, don't you agree? I especially enjoyed the stories co-authored by Misty and Philip "Sarge" Austin. Sarge was one of our earliest QO members, and wrote regularly for Arrow's Message, our first zine.

Elizabeth Moon has a new hard cover coming next month, Once a Hero. Her Remnant Population is due out then in paperback. Good news for all you Anne McCaffrey fans: for the first time in three years there's a new Pern novel, Dragonseye. Check your bookstores.

Firebird is adding more new products. Soon you'll be able to purchase charted cross-stitch designs for the Valdemar crest, Fairgrove logo, a gryphon and more. For you Barbie collectors, Teri is designing patterns for Shin'a'in and Herald outfits for both Barbie and Ken. You'll receive patterns, instructions, cultural notes, and some findings. (Findings are hard-to-find bits and piece that add the finishing touch.)

Of course you can order all of Misty's books from Firebird as well as an Arrows of the Queen Concordance or songbook, Silver Gryphon patches and pins, related jewelry and stationery, and much, much more. In the Firebird catalog you'll find T-shirts for every taste, the music of TEMPEST, Michael Longcor's latest album "Norman & Saxon," various Celtic artists, native American music by R. Carlos Nakai and others, and the theme music from the films Ladyhawke and Braveheart.

Cassettes and CDs of the songs of Oathbound are back in stock. This work is based on the first book of Vows and Honor. The re-issue of songs inspired by Oathbreakers will be ready soon, the Vows and Honor Concordance is still a work in progress. "Heralds, HArpers, & Havoc" os avao;an;e pm CD. as os "Lovers, Lore & Loss" amd "Shadow Stalker." Soon to come is a Shadow Stalker Songbook.

COLLEGIUM NEWS:

We have individual handout sheets for the aspiring Herald, Bard, Healer, Tayledras, Shin'a'in, White Winds Sorcerer/ess, and Mercenary, and instructions on how to work for Herald-Mage status if you are already a Herald. Not sure of what you want to be? Extra point requirements vary on each handout according to the skills needed, but basic requirements are the same. Create your persona's background and family and friends and let him/her grow. You'll soon know.

From Herald Housemother:

In Burning Water Misty's character Diana Tregarde says, "If it isn't true, going to do some good, or spread a little love around, don't say it, do it, or think it." This positive philodophy may express Misty's point of view, but that doesn't make her Diana Tregarde. There are those among Misty's readers who insist on confusing Misty wtih her characters and they react accordingly, going so far as to threaten her life because they disagree with a character's actions. Do these smae lunatics think Stephen King is a rabid dog? a possessed car? a haunted hotel? As Misty wrote in the Author's Note in Sacred Ground, "I am not a guru, shaman, Grand High Pooh-Bah, Guardian, Mistress of the Martian Arts, Avatar, Cosmic Earth Mother, or any incarnation of the same . . . To confuse me with what I write is as fallacious as confusing a truck driver with his Peterbilt." In spite of this disclaimer, the lunatics persist.

The latest threats are under investigation. Why are the ravings of a probable lunatic being taken so seriously? Because Misty and Larry are having nightmares, not only about the danger to themselves, but the danger to us, their fans and friends. Imagine an attack at a convention or a book signing . . .

Expected mailing dates for the rest of 1997 are 4/5, 5/17, 6/21, 8/2, 9/13, 10/25, and 12/6. Mailing Day Helpers needed! Come for the weekend if you wish; we have a spare bedroom. Visit beautiful South Jersey and pet the neighbor's burros and goats (and our cats). Of course you won't get paid, but we will feed you well.
