Border Art Border Art Dear Misty Fans,

Coming in March from Baen is Bedlam's Bard, a reissue of the Misty/Ellen Guon collaborations Knight of Ghost and Shadows and Summoned to Tourney in one volume. April is the release date for the short story collection Fiddler Fair.

DAW is shipping Oathblood for April release, and Owlsight, the sequel to Owflight, is scheduled for October. Owlsight will have a Jody Lee cover.

Many of Jody A. Lee's beautiful covers are available as prints. Three of her earlier editions have gone completely out of print. If you own "Oathbound," "Oathbreakers," or "Magic's Price," congratulations. If you've just discovered Jody's art and had your heart set on owning one of these, you're not totally out of luck. Fantastic Art maintains a Resale Registry and occasionally an out-of-print title turns up for sale. If you want one, want to establish insurance value, or if you'd like to sell your copy of one of these prints, contact Fantastic Art [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.]. They carry many other Jody Lee titles. "Last of the. Renshai" is a limited edition of just 100.

Jody Anne Elizabeth Lee was born in San Francisco in 1958. Her grandparents came from Canton, China. Her early drawings reflected the usual phases of growing up: lots of horses, clothing designs, cartoon superheroes, cute greeting card art. "Betsy Wollheim (of DAW books) has this theory that every artist in this field has a drawing of Spock hidden away in a closet somewhere," laughs Jody, "and I'm afraid it's true!"

At first Jody was very interested in illustrating children's books and greeting cards. It was her friends in the Society of Creative Anachronism who helped her develop her love of all things fantastic and medieval. They taught her how to sword fight and introduced her to popular fantasy and science fiction. That's when she decided to look for a career in cover art. (She still has her armor, which is used mostly for photo shoots.)

Jody attributes some of her success to always trying to be professional and practical. She understands that the first purpose of a cover is to sell the book. "As an illustrator," explains Jody, "I have a little 4 by 7 inch poster with which to tell a 400 or more page story. Rather than just photoproducing one instance in the book, I try to make an image that can represent the feel or mood of the book . . . I rate the success of a painting as to whether it'll look good on the living room wall.

Jody works in water based media. Some of her earlier work is in gouache, colored inks, and pencils. "Color is very important to me. I usually show up with one design and two color solutions when showing my comps to the art director."

"I feel incredibly lucky," says Jody in closing. "Sometimes I groan and moan a lot because this is not an easy profession, but that's the real truth. There are a lot of people who want to do art, and aren't able to, so I'm very grateful to fate and opportunity for letting this happen. I also have to thank all the friends and family who have helped me along. The other thing is I really am an illustrator at heart. Getting to illustrate for the likes of Mercedes Lackey and Lloyd Alexander and the others is great because I love reading their books! "

Firebird Arts and Music is another source of Jody Lee prints. Firebird carries all of Misty's books and related music; Tshirts with art by Larry Dixon as well as Onieda Indian Nation and wildlife designs; Riverdance videos; the music of TEMPEST, Michael Longcor, David Arkenstone, et al. and much more. Among new items from Firebird are the videos of The Sharpe's Series and the Bernard Cornwell Sharpe novels. Richard Sharpe is a soldier serving under Lord Wellington in Spain during the Napoleonic Wars. Series star Sean Bean has become one of England's most sought after actors.

Firebird has recently moved into a new location and is experiencing construction-related difficulties. Teri Lee thanks you for your patience and assures me your orders will be shipped as soon as possible.

TEMPEST will be appearing March 14 & 15 at the Calaveras Celtic Faire [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.]. Call [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.] for more information. During the month of December Lief and Michael were in the studio with producer Berry recording the first CALIBAN CD. The release date is set for Saint Patrick's Day. In 1997 TEMPEST played huge festivals in England, Canada, and the US, and toured across the continent four times! They're looking forward to lots more wonderful adventures in 1998. Visit their web page [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.].

Hello from Herald Housemother

My thanks to all for your concern about my recent laser surgery. It was a bit more painful than I expected (what the doctor said would be a warm sensation felt a lot more like a burn to me), but it did the trick. Now if I could only get rid of this cold/flu/whatever that insists on hanging on . . .

Writing the newsletter using Microsoft Publisher instead of good ol' WordPerfect 5.1 takes a little longer but I do like the way it looks. Most of your comments were positive, too. I was asked about accepting electronic art contributions--yes, I'm willing to try. PC format [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.] only.

Stamps For Life is still collecting used postage stamps from all countries. THe cash from the sale of these stamps is used to purchase equipment and medication for children in the Cancer Ward of Manchester Children's Hospital in England. Simply remove the stamps from all your mail and send them to White Deer [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.]. Send a few, send a lot, all will help. If you lose White Deer's address, [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.].

Anne McCaffrey's Robinton: Master Harper of Pern is available now from Del Ray. If you liked Tailchaser's Song, you'll probably like Gabriel King's The Wild Road, coming in March.
