"An Introduction to Barbie and her friends" by Mercedes Lackey:

"Way back in the dark ages, my best friend gave me one of her Barbies--a blond bubble cut who had gotten one hand chewed off by her dog. I proceeded to make many costumes and enact many dramas with this doll - but not exactly the kind that Mattel had in mind. The heads of these dolls came off very easily, so Stuart, Jane Grey, Anne Boleyn (I was especially fond of doing Anne Boleyn), Catherine Howard, Marie Antoinette--we did them all. If I recall correctly, she ended her life as a re-enactor when we decided to do Jeanne d'Arc, thus anticipating the flammable qualities of the Rollerblade Barbie by more than 20 years.

"But although I consider myself a feminist, I still like Barbie--because I am also still a closet costumer, and no one wears clothes like Barbie and her friends! She can get away with outrageous outfits that no human could wear, and she has the added advantage of being so small that a costume that would take ten years to make for a human can be done in a few weeks for her. So I'm really glad to see that Firebird is doing Valdemar/Velgarth costume patterns for her and her friends, and I hope everyone enjoys them as much as I will!" - Misty

Firebird's Shin'a'in Casual Pattern Kit comes with patterns for male & female clan members, horse tack patterns, some hard to find materials such as fake fur and jewelry findings and even modeling clay with which to make teeth for a necklace. The directions are clear and appear easy to follow. If you are skilled, you can use the information provided to adapt full-scale patterns. There is also a pattern for Herald Field Whites.

Other tempting treasures in the Firebird catalog are T-shirts, feather and pewter jewelry, Misty's recordings book and music and songbooks, stationary, needlepoint patterns, and lot, lots more. TEMPEST recordings (except "Turn of the Wheel") are 25% off to QO members. Order $75 worth and receive a free Tempest-logo mug.

Baen has just released The Free Bards, Misty's Bardic Voices trilogy in one volume. If you missed The Lark and the Wren, The Robin and the Kestrel, or The Eagle and the Nightingales, here's your chance to read the adventures of Rune, Robin and Nightingale. This trade paperback is priced at $15. Young Miles, by Lois McMaster Bujold, is another 3-in-1 collection of previously published works in trade paperback. Lois's notes in the back are worth the $15 cover price.

What else to read while waiting for the next book from Misty? I recommend Mark Shepherd's Spiritride, Tanya Huff's Blood Debt, Elizabeth Moon's Once A Hero (hardcover), Brian Jaques' Pearls of Lutra (hardcover), the new BOLO novel by William H. Keith Jr., BOLO Brigade, and the Eddings' Belgarath the Sorcerer (not as good as The Belgariad but still interesting). If you like anthologies, look for Elf Fantastic, with stories by Andre Norton and Tanya Huff and edited by Martin H. Greenberg. Return of the Dinosaurs, edited by Mike Resnick and Martin H. Greenberg, has contributions from Jospha Sherman and Melanie Rawn.

And if you've never read J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit or Lord of the Rings, what are you waiting for?
