Dear Misty Fans,

Border artThe dedication in Winds of Change reads "Dedicated to the Tayledras and Heralds of our world: police, fire fighters, and rescue workers everywhere, whose accomplishments in everyday life outdo anything in fiction." Added to that list, I think, should be Misty and Larry themselves. Almost immediately after Hurricane Andrew hit Florida. Larry posted the following on GEnie:

"Misty and I had 381 Ibs. of medical supplies and goods in the air to Florida within 16 hours when this disaster hit. The SCA was able to put together a delivery conduit directly into the hardest-hit areas of Homestead. A 7-truck convoy of collected goods was there for people that had yet to see as much as a policeman or soldier in the remains of their neighborhoods. And you've all followed the saga of our floods, tornado, and the loss of my studio here; I spent all of my studio budget on the goods we have sent and are sending to Florida.

"We can make more money, sometime in the future. These people needed the supplies then. I can wait longer for a place to work, they need a place to sleep and eat and bathe . . .

"Second shipment of tools and medical supplies to Florida from High Flight went out three hours ago via FedEx. Another several pounds' worth, slated to go to the SCA/Trimaris staging area for allocation to real people in real trouble . . .

"And we put together a direct-purchase arrangement with a tool importer; we are now able to buy relief-effort tools such as saws, pliers, claw hammers and the like straight from the container-ship broker. First order from here is for 50 8' x 10' tarps and a few dozen handsaws and pry bars. Every little bit . . . "

Write to Firebird Arts & Music [Ed. note 2004: Out-of-date info. withheld.] for ordering information on Larry's interior illustrations in Winds of Change. Firebird carries all of Misty's books and tapes and many other treasures. Send a #10 SASE their new for a copy of their new catalog. You can place an order with Firebird by calling [Ed. note 2004: Out-of-date info. withheld.]. If you get the answering machine, leave your complete name and address and/or phone number! For sale now is the Jody Lee cover print of Winds of Fate, as well as the cover prints of Oathbound, Oathbreakers, and all three Magic books. The Concordance for the Arrows books will be available in time for the holidays; Juanita and Buck Coulson will soon finish the Herald-Mage Concordance. The Shadowstalker tape is a "work in progress" with no definite release date.

Congratulations to Misty, for having both The Bard's Tale: Castle of Deception and Winds of Fate on the September Locus paperbacks monthly bestseller list! Castle of Deception, co-authored with Josepha Sherman, appears also on the B. Dalton and Waldenbooks bestseller lists. The October Locus shows The Ship Who Searched, by Misty and Anne McCaffrey, as number one in paperbacks on its bestseller list and number two on the Waldenbooks and B. Dalton lists. Winds of Fate appears as number six on the latter two lists.

By the way, Misty and Larry were not at WorldCon in Orlando, but someone wearing a badge with the name "Mercedes Lackey" was. If you have any information on this woman (imposter? coincidence?), please let Misty know. You can write to Misty and Larry at their business address: [Ed. note 2004: Out-of-date info. withheld.]. Letters and cards can always be sent directly to the High Flight address rather than asking DAW or me to forward them. (You can write to any author in care of his/her publisher. Mail is forwarded.)

Science Fiction Book Club members voted The Elvenbane by Misty and Andre Norton as the winner of the 1991 Book of the Year Award. Other Misty books offered by SFBC are The Last Herald-Mage (Magic's Pawn, Magic's Promise, & Magic's Price in a special 3-in-one edition) and The Lark and the Wren. The November featured selection is Bedla»t's Bard, a special 2-in-1 edition of Knight of Ghosts and Shadows and Summoned to Toumey. If you are a SFBC member and would like to see them offer even more of Misty's books, write to them at [Ed. note 2004: Out-of-date info. withheld.]. If you would like a membership form so you can join SFBC, send me a SASE. The current offer is six books for $1 plus shipping and handling, and the obligation to buy 4 more books within 2 years.

Forthcoming books are When the Bough Breaks, written with Holly Lisle, and Wing Commander: Freedom Flight, written with Ellen Guon. If you've finished Winds of Change and are wondering what to read next, try Holly Lisle's Fire in the Mist. "One of the hottest writers I've come across in a long time&uqot; says the cover quote by Mercedes Lackey. "Her entrancing characters and action-filled story will hold you spell-bound."

MEMBER NEWS:

From Shirlene Ananayo aka Magpi of the Southern Sky: "Greetings from the fringe of the hurricane-torn 'war zone' of Miami! . . . Tam, me, our roomies & our assorted cats are all fine. We haven't got electricity, but we do have roofs over our heads . . . Due to the unexpected severity of Hurricane Andrew, we couldn't imagine an attempt to crank out an issue of Southern Arrow now . . . We're really okay, but the pictures on the news (both vid & paper) don't do the devastation justice . . . the dryads will weep for decades . . . " (My apologies to Shirlene and Tam. They managed to get the Southern Arrow out before the October QO newsletter, and my only problem was a stubborn computer.)

From Archangel: I had to drop 3 more stories so the zine The Storyteller is now only $2.00. Those who have already subscribed should have gotten their extra dollar back by now.

From Vickie McElfresh: Issue 6 of Companion's Rest is ready. The cost is $2 an issue or $12 a subscription. Because of college I've decided to do only 3 issues a year. The first issue of the new year will come out in January. The cost of the second volume will be $4 an issue or $12 a subscription. I'm going to try to make the zine longer and more like a magazine, with regular columnists as well as stories, art, and poems. Thanks to everyone who helped me get through this first year. Send subscription money and SASE's for guidelines to [Ed. note 2004: Out-of-date info. withheld.].

Chain letters may be fun for those who get very little mail but I HATE THEM! Do NOT use QO addresses for chain letters. According to the chain letter I received last week, I'm going to die in poverty real soon because I broke the chain. That's nothing compared to what I wish the person who sent me the blasted thing!

My moving Day is November 10, whether I'm ready or not. If you're ever on the southern end of the New Jersey Turnpike, give a call; I'm about half an hour away.

No November newsletter, but there will be a December issue, mailed around December 14th. Send zine and chapter updates, fan messages, and Herald/Healer/Bard packets to the Shiloh address by December first. Oh yes...the computer problem seems to have been fixed. (Please, please, please, make it so.) I hope it likes its new location.
